Liberian President George Oppong Weah could not stop praising Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen
Liberian President George Oppong Weah could not stop praising Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen while watching Nigeria play Sierra Leone on Day 5 of their group’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations competition.
President Weah, the 1995 World, European, and African Footballer of the Year, had written a personal letter to Osimhen after his outstanding season in which he scored 25 league goals to lead SC Napoli to their first Italian Serie A title in 33 years, encouraging him to keep working hard and setting new records.
On Sunday, as he sat in the presidential box of the Samuel Kanyon Doe Stadium in Paynesville with Nigeria’s Ambassadors to Liberia and Sierra Leone (Excellences Godfrey Odudigbo and Henry Omakwu respectively), President of NFF, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, NFF Board Members Rt. Hon. Nse Essien and Sunday Dele-Ajayi, among others, Weah could not stop singing Osimhen’s praises.
The Napoli attacker did not let down, giving Nigeria a 2-0 lead with two goals in the 20th and 33rd minutes of play.
In June 2022, he scored against Sierra Leone in Abuja, helping Nigeria win 2-1 and earn three points on the first day of the series. A few days later, he scored four of Nigeria’s 10 goals against Sao Tome and Principe in Agadir, Morocco, helping Nigeria set a new world record for wins.
Aside from President Weah, members of the Nigerian community in Liberia and other excited fans of Osimhen from Liberia and Sierra Leone rushed to the window area of the Super Eagles’ dressing room and tried to force it open while yelling, “We want Victor!”
